Food from the South

I have been a little on the quiet side today- so I thought that I would show you
what I have been up to.
I did my weekly Walmart run today and while I was there
I picked up something that my guys like.
Peanuts.
But not just any type of peanuts-raw peanuts. And why would someone want to buy raw peanuts? To make boiled peanuts of course.
I am not sure if this is something that we enjoy just in the South-but they are good.
And you should not keep a good thing to yourself.
They are very easy to make.
They take awhile to cook so I am starting them tonight. Tomorrow I will let you know how they come out. This time (new to me) I am cooking them over night in my Crockpot.
And for your viewing pleasure----some pictures!

Boiled Peanuts

First-- rinse the peanuts till the water is clear.

Peanuts are sold by the pound and you need one pound or 1 1/2 quarts.
Use a 1/2 cup of salt per pound.
You will want to do more than one pound because they go fast
and you can store them in the frig.
Then add 2 or 3 quarts of water.

Put all the combined ingredients in your Crockpot and turn it on high.

Cover the peanuts and cook 5 to 7 hours. Replace water if needed.
Cook peanuts should not be crunchy on the inside.

I will let you know tomorrow how they turn out.
And now that blogger is finally working I will click publish before it has a tantrum again.

Sounds good, I'd not heard of this before. I'm feeling curious today (apologies if I've asked you before), what are your genealogical roots ie German, Italian - where did your family originate before coming to the States? I just love hearing the stories of folk and how they wound up in different countries!

Blogger certainly was having some tantrums last night.

Those look yummy. I'm wondering- can you make them with a cinnamon and sugar mixture? I love peanuts like that.

Melanie--
I am not sure if you can do them with sugar and cinnamon.
I am not sure I can describe the taste of the boiled peanuts. But I do know they put other seasons in them-but those are on the salty side.

Interesting, now to figure out how to make them cajun-styled. I've only had boiled peanuts with the shells and having the option to have them sans shells I'm there. I don't know about the rest of you but I think boiled peanuts remind me a little of kidney beans where the texture is concerned. Would you agree?

I should probably clarify for those unfamiliar with boiled peanuts. I don't eat the shell, just the peanuts inside.
